Warehouse Consultants for Design and Automation

Warehouse layout design and automation consultants help you optimise how your internal warehouse operation works, from layout and storage capacity to material flow, automation, labour use and cost control. Bisham Consulting provides independent warehouse design advice, helping you assess risks, plan practical optimisations and create warehouse operations that support faster handling, better space use and measurable efficiency gains.

Warehouse Layout Design and Operations Consultants

Our consulting team is focused on increasing your performance and profitability. Bisham’s warehouse design consultants provide third-party independent advice on all aspects of warehouses and distribution, warehouse design and layout. As part of our warehouse consulting services, we advise on warehouse management systems and operations, including mechanical handling equipment (MHE). We can improve your racking layout and pallet racking facilities to optimise the space and the supply chain to achieve fast and measurable benefits. The optimisation of warehouse layout, warehouse space, and the efficiency of the distribution centre are fundamental to the profitability of your organisation.

Warehouse Automation Design and Implementation

In addition, our warehouse automation consultants have extensive experience and expertise in warehouse automation and mechanisation. In a fast-moving environment, small changes can achieve enormous gains. There are several critical factors that organisations need to assess in preparation for the automation journey. A Rapid Automation Review (RAR) needs to be carried out. This will define that there is a need for automation that will add value to the current operation and will conform to the supplier’s supply chain. Ensure the client is completely on board with the decision, as it is a big investment.

Top 5 Areas for a Successful Warehouse Automation Design Project

  • Ensure that the technology being considered or in place is appropriate for both the operational processes and the performance requirements. Define the question as to what exactly the need is, rather than the desire.
  • Be prepared to put in a lot of effort and resources into the planning and detailed design at the start of the project. Automated systems are inevitably “bespoke”, as business and operations are not identical. Beware cookie-cutter designs that are one-size-fits-all solutions.
  • Establish, early in the project, very clearly what the requirements are of the proposed automation concerning the building interface. If the automation design and building design are not coordinated, it will result in a suboptimal outcome for the automation.
  • Be certain of the “lifetime costs” of the proposed solution. Consider both Capex and Opex. Ensure that what is being offered and quoted for covers all the requirements; avoid surprise additional costs for exclusions and extras, as such costs can be significant.
  • Take particular care in establishing and negotiating the ongoing maintenance requirements and costs. The equipment is far too expensive and critical to be left idle for any time.

Warehouse Design and Operations: Service Elements

  • Our warehousing consultancy team finds and develops new warehouse sites. We maximise the use of all ground space and all available height. In addition, we ensure the best possible logical traffic flows for the best possible performance because so much of the profit lies in the last few percent of efficiency.
  • Bisham helps with design and modifications to conventional and automated warehouses.
  • We specialise in optimising the cost of space, equipment and labour. As a result, you achieve greater productivity and save time.
  • Building in flexibility and growth potential is important so that your business can easily expand in the future.
  • We remodel existing operations to cope with changes in throughput and stock profiles.
  • Optimise ordering profiles.
  • Improving overall layout efficiency will keep costs down.
  • At Bisham, our total focus is on improving your operating efficiency.
  • To achieve this, we analyse all costs, all benefits and, most importantly, the risks as well.

Warehouse Design Services: 35,000 Square Metres

This project involved the design of a brand new 35,000 m² for a major retail food chain. Our brief included:

  • Designing separate compartments to accommodate food products at various temperatures.

  • Provision for ambient, temperature-controlled fresh foods and vegetables.

  • Specification of all freezing and cooling equipment.

  • Complete design of loading docks for cross-docking.

  • Design for incoming traffic and dispatch to allow for external traffic flows and parking.

Project Management of a 32-Metre-High Automated Warehouse

This involved the project management of a 32-metre-high fully automated storage and retrieval facility. We specified a double-decked crane system capable of achieving a throughput of 20,00 units per hour. This was the first such system ever built in Europe. It is worth noting that this massive project was completed both on time and budget.

Operating Efficiency Review of an Automated European Distribution Centre

This case was an efficiency review of an existing fully automated storage and retrieval facility. The centre provided high-bay pallet storage coupled with a tray system for small items. Conveyors were used for both packing areas and end sortation. The project included re-engineering all systems and setting up a mathematical model for manpower planning and improved productivity.

Warehouse Design: 30,000 Pallet Capacity Warehouse

This client required the identification of the optimum location of the site. In addition, it was vital to get the optimum shape and height.

Redesign of Raw Materials Stores

This involved the storage of several different pallet sizes. In addition, there were varying stack height capabilities to serve a high-speed processing and packing operation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Warehouse Design and Automation

How can warehouse design and automation optimise ROI?2026-06-15T13:34:16+00:00

Warehouse design and automation can support ROI by reducing handling time, optimising labour utilisation, increasing storage capacity, and reducing errors and delays. The strongest results come from matching the level of automation to the operation, rather than investing in technology that adds cost without solving the main issue.

What warehouse automation technologies should companies consider?2026-06-15T13:33:44+00:00

Common warehouse automation options include conveyors, sortation systems, automated storage and retrieval systems, warehouse management systems, mechanical handling equipment and high-bay storage. The right choice depends on throughput, order profile, internal layout, operational requirements, budget and lifetime operating costs.

How do warehouse design consultants optimise throughput and space use?2026-06-15T13:33:06+00:00

Warehouse design consultants review stock profiles, picking activity, storage needs, traffic flow, equipment, site, space and operational constraints. This helps create a layout that uses space more effectively and supports faster, safer movement through the warehouse.

What is warehouse design and automation?2026-06-15T13:32:35+00:00

Warehouse design and automation is the planning of warehouse layout, storage, material flow, systems and handling equipment to optimise operational performance. It helps reduce wasted space, unnecessary movement, labour pressure and avoidable costs.
